Widowed Women & Refugee Camp Support: KENYA

OPPORTUNITY

The widowed women and Kakuma refugee camp residents are in desperate need to earn an income to provide for their families in the absence of family and spouses. With our partner Fidele, we have been able to provide cash and travel assistance to help support small business ventures for these women. Khot (pictured above) receives regular monthly funding to sustain her small vegetation business. Khot wakes early and visits nearby farms to buy and sell vegetation at her stand in the community of West Turkana, Kenya. This business brings much needed income to Khot and her children, but also brings food to her community that they would otherwise not have due to lack of transportation to neighboring farms and communities.

MILESTONES

  • Sustainable income to meet basic needs for Khot and her children.

  • The start-up of Khot’s small business.

  • Transportation services provided to neighboring farms for supplies to support the vegetable stand.

BENEFITS

  • Opportunity to grow small business support for other community members.

  • A sense of empowerment for Khot in running her own business with the support of Mission & Movement and its donors.

  • Bringing much needed food to the West Turkana community.
