Renda School for Girls

OPPORTUNITY

In Kisii, one of the largest slums in Kenya, the construction of Renda School for Girls is officially underway. The school will soon be a beautiful structure that will provide secondary education to 80 girls from Kisii & Kibera, with a long-term goal of eventually becoming a boarding house. Members of the Kisii community have been instrumental in seeing this project flourish, from making thousands of bricks by hand, to the official breaking ground by digging trenches so construction can begin. Mission & Movement tapped into the passion and values of several of our donors and the local Kisii community to ensure the school is constructed and ready for the next school year.

MILESTONES

  • Raised $100K to fund Renda School for Girls through various fundraisers and events along with our partners at Saydam Properties Group in DC.

  • Created connectivity with the local community to not only begin construction, but also to provide income by contracting local community members.

  • Worked closely with our partner Job who is on the ground in Kisii overseeing the project, to visit with local officials to gain approvals, signatures, and blueprints for the school.

BENEFITS

  • 80 girls will receive a secondary education

  • Bringing long-term income to local community members who will be employed as instructors, kitchen staff, office staff, and Job’s wife Nancy will be holding the role of Headmaster.

  • Meals will be provided to students every day and transportation assistance will be available.
